Granville Island

Granville Island

Granville Island is truly the beating heart of our city, it tells our story and echoes the entrepreneurial traditions of Vancouver’s heritage and history.

Vancouver itself was once known as ‘Granville’ until it was renamed in 1886. The island community retained the appellation and the site became crucial to the construction of the then fledgling city. Its initial tenants at the earlier part of the last century – saw mills, metal works and shipping companies – were integral in the laying of Vancouver’s foundations. Relics of this past workforce are proudly curated across the island, and serve as reminders of an industrious and hard-working tradition.

Today the island is home to a melting pot of artists and merchants, making it a unique destination beloved of Vancouverites and visitors alike. People come for the fabulous fresh food, pastiche of vendors, music, atmosphere or just to amble in the sunshine.

Granville Island to this day is a living, breathing entity that continues to flourish under an entrepreneurial spirit. We are a diverse and supportive community of artists, vendors, restauranteurs, musicians and merchants. Our collective efforts continue to make this landmark island a place to be proud of.
