Edie Hats
At the heart of Granville Island is a blue building called The Net Loft. Once used for repairing and storing fishing nets, the Net Loft is home to Edie Hats – an essential stop on any visit to Granville Island!
Walking through the doors at Edie Hats is like stepping into a dress up box from another time. Richly layered decor, cosy lighting and comfortable furnishings, Edie Hats is not a store – it is an experience. Wonderful hats peep out from every nook and cranny. From practical waxed cotton rain hats to elaborate, feathered, handmade creations, there is a hat for every mood!
Edie has began making hats from her home many years ago. With a natural talent for millinery and an eye for style her hats quickly developed a loyal following. As her popularity increased, Edie realised she needed not only a bigger space from which to sell her hats but in order to meet demand she would have to start importing hats from other sources. The first Edie Hats opened in a small shop in Vancouver’s Kitsilano neighborhood over twenty years ago. It quickly became a lively community hub, people dropping in for the fashion and ambience. In a mere five years, it had outgrown its location and moved to our home on Granville Island, taking on legendary status as a must-see destination for both locals and visitors alike.
More than Just a Hat Store
There is a sense of magic and artistry on Granville Island, a feeling that at any moment something special can happen.
Every now and then, as twilight emerges and the bustle from the market begins to slow, Edie Hats will magiacally transform into a live theatre. Hats racks are whisked aside and replaced by a Parisian cafe, ready to entertain and bewitch a delighted crowd! The musical instruments and sprung dance floor come to life. Laughter, song, and clapping fill the candlelit stage.
Edie’s Café
Since the opening night gala in 2005, Edie Hats has transformed itself into theatre for a series of very unique performances like “Café de Chinitas” with Mozaico Flamenco Dance Theatre, “Paris Blues” and “Kansas City” nights with bluesman Jim Byrnes. Edie Hats has also been host to interactive theme events like “Titanic Night” which included a presentation by noted fashion historians and collectors Ivan Sayers and Klaus Jahnke and a catered re-creation of an authentic menu from the Titanic. Guests were encouraged to dress in period costume (including hats, of course!) and play a historic role in the evening’s drama.
